My Favorite Books - Jen Lancaster

I LOVE to read.  Sadly, this is a hobby I don't have much time for these days.  By the way, did you know you can get cute reading glasses at the dollar store?  Yes, I have to wear glasses to read now, and I lose them all the time, so I consider $1 glasses a genius idea.  I also haven't jumped on the e-reader craze yet.  I enjoy turning the pages in an actual book - it gives me a sense of accomplishment.  Anyway.

My taste in books has changed through the years.  I've read my share of classic literature and dark, brooding story lines.  These days, when I'm gifted with time to read, I want it to be something that makes me smile or laugh, or uplifts me in some way.  There's enough darkness in the world - I want to be LIGHT when I'm reading.

Each month I plan to share a favorite book or author who makes me smile.  I'm always on the hunt for a good read, so any suggestions are welcome.  This month I'm recommending:

Jen Lancaster
author of
Bitter is the New Black:  Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smart-ass, or Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office.

Even the title makes me laugh!  Jen has written ten books, including 6 "memoirs" and 3 works of fiction.  Jen worked in the corporate world until she was laid off post 9/11.  She eventually started a blog where she wrote about her struggles to find another job and live within her new means.

Her memoirs are funny, realistic and honest.  She is one of a few authors who make me laugh out loud while I'm reading.  Jen doesn't take herself seriously and is admittedly narcissistic. She was a teenager in the 80's so I get all of her references, and I'm pretty sure we should be best friends.  In each book she challenges herself to do something new and learns great lessons on the way.

Her most recent non fiction book, The Tao of Martha:  My Year of Living or Why I'm Never Getting All That Glitter Off of the Dog is one of my favorites.  Jen decides to live like Martha Stewart for a year, and follow her guidance to become more crafty and organized. Hilarity ensues, and my husband kept asking me "WHAT is so funny"?

If you're searching for an uplifting book to take on vacation or read by the pool this summer, look no further than Jen Lancaster - I promise you will feel lighter!

  6. I love Jen Lancaster's books! I like her for the same reasons you do. I eagerly await each new one she writes, especially the memoirs. I have been on the verge of peeing myself -- she's that funny! Ever read Celia Rivenbark? She's hysterical, too.

  7. Bitter is the New Black is also my favorite book written by Jen Lancaster. The title makes me laugh and the story is stunning. Jen Lancaster is an ironic lady and professional writer who published bestsellers and creative books. I've read her another book "how to create a Wikipedia page for a brand" and it's really amazing and helpful tip for a brand.
