Favorite Find - Shampoo Bars

I've always been a bit hair challenged.  I have very thick, wavy hair, which sounds good in theory, but is difficult to take care of.  I inherited it from Grandma Mary, who complained about her hair until the day she died.

When I was five, my mom got tired of constantly working the tangles out, so she took me for a "shag" haircut.  Anybody remember those?  I came out like a mini Carol Brady - not the best look on a kindergartner.

During my teen years my unruly hair reached new heights - literally.  Everyone had big hair in the 80's - but my frizzy curls took it to a whole other level.

Part of the problem is that I never know what to do with all of it.  I've considered cutting it short many times, but that causes my husband to feign a heart attack.  Forget a ponytail or braid - I'm hopeless at either of those.  I think if I had a girl child to practice on it might help.  Add in the fact that I color it every six weeks....enough said.

I've purchased enough hair products over the years to keep a sorority house happy, searching for the smooth, shiny tresses of my dreams.  Sometimes they help, most of the time they don't.

But then I discovered....

Shampoo and conditioner bars.  My sister and I were in Las Vegas for a quick overnight trip, and instead of gambling (yuck) we were shopping (yay).   We came upon a store called Basin White, where we were introduced to shampoo bars for your hair.

Because they are solid, they don't need the extra preservatives that liquid shampoos and conditioners require for shelf life.  Each bar is made with natural ingredients, and there are six different varieties.

I chose the Almond Coconut since I color my hair.  The description:

"Deliciously scented tenderness for color treated hair, with pampering avocado oil and cocoa butter, hydrating vitamin E and nourishing rice bran oil. Cool blue lather helps tone down brassiness and keep hair color true..."

Just reading that makes my hair feel happier!  I will admit that lathering up a bar for my head took some getting used to, but in all my life my hair has never been so manageable and soft.  I purchased the bars in March, and I've only used about half so far.

Now that my hair is finally behaving, I was able to manage a side ponytail, all by myself!

Alison at Get Your Pretty On did a video post a few weeks ago with four simple summer hairstyles.  Trust me, if I can master one, they really are easy.

By the way, I was not compensated to write this post, and Basin White doesn't even know I exist.  I felt it was my "beauty duty" to share these little gems!

  2. Intrigued! So does your hair get all lathering and sudsy still?

    1. Not really. There is not as much lather as traditional shampoo, which was weird at first. A little bit goes a long way!

  9. I've never heard of them. I have thin but very curly hair and when it's rainy or the least bit humid I swear I look like I stuck my finger in a socket. I need to get back to Vegas. Where I enjoy gambling AND shopping!
