My New Happy: What Is This Plant?

What Is This Plant?

This beautiful flowering bush was in our front garden bed when we bought our house eleven years ago.  It is about six feet tall and nine feet long.

It blooms only once a year, in late July or early August.  The flowers start as small buds, then slowly unfurl into lovely treats for the bees of the neighborhood.  In about two weeks the flowers will fall off, creating quite a mess to clean up.  But that's what the teenagers are for!

The problem?  We have no idea what it is.  Any suggestions would be welcome in the comments.

Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I finally found out that the are Rose of Sharon - so you are close - or maybe they are the same?

  2. They look like a variety of hibiscus. They are usually tropical but there are more hardy varieties. Not a 100% though when you find out let me know.

  6. Aren't blogging friends and readers wonderful? You can find out almost as much as Google from them...with much more fun. I thought it looked like a hibiscus too - but mystery presence in your yard it has been.
