My New Happy: Back to School Blues

Back to School Blues

As a general rule, my younger son T enjoys school.  He's very social, involved in many activities, and has a love of learning.  Last week was the start of his Junior year, and for the first time, he wasn't ready to go back.

Maybe he had too much fun this summer?  It was his first taste of true independence, with his own car and lots to places to go.  Maybe he's worried about his loaded schedule?  He has three Advanced Placement classes, Pre-Calculus, Spanish III, and Art.  Thank goodness for Art.

He's a teenage boy, so I'll probably never get a straight answer out of him.  But for whatever reason, the grin you see above was plastered on because I told him to smile or else.

Unlike this happy little guy, eleven years ago, on the first day of Kindergarten.  He was bouncing with excitement.

Oh my, the cuteness!  Missing his front teeth, scar on his forehead from five stitches due to a bicycle mishap, Pokemon backpack stocked and ready.

The year T started kindergarten, our school district went on strike.  For 49 days.  It was the longest teacher strike in Washington state history.  Poor T just wanted to start kindergarten, and every day he asked me if he could go tomorrow.  By the time school began, it was almost Halloween.

Maybe I should show teenage T this picture, and point out how excited kindergarten T was to start his school career.  But he'll probably just remind me that there is no Pre-Calculus in kindergarten...

  1. I totally understand the lack of enthusiasm! Who wants to deliberately immerse themselves in calculus! :)

  2. I don't blame him: math stinks. I hate it. I don't understand it. I got a D in Algebra in high school.

  3. Love that you have his first pictures from Kindergarten! So cute. OH pre-calc, you can tell him I made it all the way to calc 3...and beyond, yikes! I don't remember any of it...or hardly any of it.

  4. My younger son took a lot of AP classes too, and this fall he's a freshman in college and just reaped the benefits: second semester he will officially be a sophomore!
My older son would not, under any circumstances, smile for his picture junior year too. So I said "schools been canceled. . . forever". He started to laugh, the smart photographer clicked and I have a picture with the BEST smile!

    1. I'm hoping we cut at least a year of undergrad out too. He wants to go to vet school, so maybe we'll only have 7 years to pay for! Love your picture taking technique!

  5. Aww!! He's still so cute. Scarlet just started kindergarten and I have no desire to tell her about the math horrors awaiting her.
And hey, maybe she'll like math!

  7. I wouldn't be too excited about calculus either...then again I only got as far as trig. I hated math. My kids, on the other hand, all love it. Go figure. They didn't get that from me. Hope the year is off to a great start!

    1. Thanks Michelle! I didn't mind math, but it wasn't my favorite either. I think that's how my son feels too!
