My New Happy: Some Super Great Teens

Some Super Great Teens

I get so tired of hearing stories on the news about all the bad things teens do.   But recently I came across two stories involving some super great teenagers, and they need to be shared. Kindness is alive and well in this young generation.

Being homecoming queen can be pretty exciting, and when Lillian Skinner found out she had been nominated, she was thrilled.  But days later she was crushed to learn that it was a prank planned by a group of mean girls.  When friends Anahi Alvarez and Naomi Martinez found out about the cruel joke, they made a pact:  if either of them won the crown, they would immediately pass it on to Lillian.

Several weeks later it happened - Anahi was named homecoming queen during the Friday night football game.  Without hesitation, she immediately asked Lillian to come forward, and gave the crown and title to her.  Skinner's reaction was, "Is this a dream or something?" When people ask Alvarez if she won, her reply is beautiful.  "No, Lilly is homecoming queen. Lilly won. I just ran in her place, in her position."

The best part of all?  Ellen DeGeneres heard about the girls, and invited them all to her show, where she gave them each $10,000 towards their future college expenses.

Three super great teens - proving that loyalty and friendship still mean something.

Several years ago, Genevieve Liu's father drowned in Lake Michigan while trying to save two swimmers.  She was only thirteen at the time, and his death was devastating. Even surrounded by friends and family, she felt very alone.

Genevieve soon realized that the best way to deal with her grief was to find a purpose, so she created Slap'd (Surviving Life After A Parent Dies).  The site is set up to help teens and young adults deal with the loss of a parent.  They can ask questions and design tribute pages for their loved one, or find articles about loss.

A super great teen - making a difference in the lives of others.

My friend Susan, who blogs at the most -- of every moment, shared another story about some super great teens last week.  It's definitely worth a click and read.

An entire football team of super great teens - showing that they can put themselves aside for the good of someone else.

Kudos to all of these super great teenagers.  You make me glad to be living in a world that you'll be running someday!

  3. Thank you for Happy News! Overall I beleive there are more good people in this world doing good things every day than bad ones making bad choices. I have my kids think of themselves and everyone they have dealt with in a day and reflect on the good as evidence.

  6. This is a topic that we have been talking about in our house lately. I mentioned it on my post on Monday. My husband were working in two different places during the Spartanburg WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S and when we met back up to do the walk the first thing we said to each other was "Have you noticed how many teenagers and college kids are out here working today?" It was an amazing experience and it was so heartwarming to see all the kids involved! Great story! Off to read Susan's I must have missed it this week!

  7. Inspiring! Thank you so much for posting this. I agree, there are so many stories when teens screw up. And we know that, behind the scenes, there are millions who don't. It's so nice to be taken behind the scenes now and then.
P.S. I couldn't get the video from Susan to load. I was told it wasn't available in my country! What?! I'm from Canada! We've had computers and the internet for weeks now!!! :)
