My New Happy: Drink More Water

Drink More Water

We've heard it a million times.  I'm making it a million and one.

Drink more water.

I have been guilty of not drinking enough.  Partly because I think it's boring, but mostly because of Diet Coke.

But drinking water has so many benefits.  It's great for your skin.  It helps curb your appetite, since we often mistake dehydration for hunger.  Water flushes toxins from your body, and boosts your immune system.

One of my goals for this year is to limit my Diet Coke consumption, my favorite drink of choice.  I don't like coffee, so I usually start the morning off with a Diet Coke, and by the end of the day, I've had five or six. Although there's not nearly as much caffeine in soda compared to coffee, there's also nothing of value in a Diet Coke.  I can't even explain why I love it so much, but let's just say I get a little panicky when we're getting low at the house.

Three weeks ago I started weaning myself off, and I'm down to one a day. DO NOT try to take that one away from me.

The good news is that I've replaced all that Diet Coke with water, which I thought was going to be really difficult, due to the ho-hum flavor I mentioned above.  However, for Christmas my mom gave me a pitcher with a fruit infuser inside, and I am in love.  Our tap water in Washington is already pretty good, but now I'm adding lemon and blueberries and it tastes refreshing and far from boring.

Ronda at The Domestic Curator shared ten more fruit infused recipes on her blog, including orange-mint and pineapple-mango.  I have yet to try them, but as soon as we have a better produce selection at the grocery store, I'm making every single one.

First thing in the morning I have a cold glass of water.  I read somewhere that this is like an alarm clock for your metabolism, and it's been shown to increase your calorie burning potential all day long.  Then I fill up a water bottle with the infused water, and keep sipping from it throughout the day.

And as much as I hate to give up the Diet Coke, all of those "drink more water" people are right.  My skin looks better, my stomach isn't bloated, and so far I haven't caught any of the nasty viruses going around.

So for the million and second time, just do it.  Drink more water.

P.S.  I tried a different font on this post today, because it seemed a little easier to read.  Thoughts?

  1. Drinking a glass of water is the first thing I do in the morning. I weaned myself off of Diet Pepsi almost 2 years ago and don't miss it at all. Once in awhile I will order one if we are out. That infuser sounds great! So many combinations you can do with it! I like the new font!

    1. My plan is to stop drinking Diet Coke completely, but for now it's my only source of caffeine. The infuser is a great idea!

  2. Good for you to ween off the DC! Everything in moderation ;)

I like to keep lemon water in my fridge and/or prepare a full glass every night. Drink it first thing in the morning and you're detoxed and ready for the day! Love infused water :)

  3. Thanks for all the infusion flavors Lana. I rarely drink a soda, but coffee is my poison on choice! I glanced at my water bottle this morning and picked up my coffee cup instead. Your advice of a glass of water first thing makes sense though - going to drink one now!
I never had an issue with the old font - but I really like the new one!

    1. I don't know why I don't like coffee, but I never have. I can't wait to try more of the infusions.

  5. I try to limit myself to 2 Diet Cokes a day. The rest of the time I have water. I don't drink coffee either so Diet Coke is how I get my caffeine.

  7. I am a huge fan of water... I drink 8-10 glasses. I rarely if ever get ill and my daughter loves the infused water. I'm happy to give this to her as long as she drinks water.

It's been 5 years or more since I drank pop... (soda... :-) ... I don't miss it any more ;-) It was tough to break my daughter but she has cut back to a few per month ;-)

Good luck with cutting back Lana, it's really worth it ♡

  8. I am a sweet tea addict! I figure there is a gallon a water that goes into it. I know technically this is cheating but I can only give up one thing a year without a meltdown and cigarettes are it this year....maybe next year haha!

  9. Ooh, I love infused waters! How awesome!
And kudos to you for replacing Diet Coke with water. I'm the WORST with water. I was just away for a week and it's so hard to keep on top of water drinking when traveling. I just didn't want to have to go to the bathroom during theme parks and airplane rides too often.
Now I'm back and feeling the effects! Trying to drink a lot today.
    Thanks for the reminder!
