The Ultimate Road Trip

Today I'm linking up with the Style Me Bloggers to share our summer travel plans.   I've got a lot of fun things coming up in the next few months, but I think I'll wait and share them as they happen.

Although I wrote about camping and hiking this week, I really prefer my travel to include hotels, shopping, and nice restaurants.  Maybe some beach time with a fruity drink in hand.

Having said that, I've got a secret dream vacation that's been percolating in the back of my brain for years:  to rent a deluxe motor home and go on an ultimate road trip around the U.S.  I'm 99% sure I could never get my husband to go for it, but I'd love to be gone for at least a year, and hit every state.  There's so many wonderful sights to see, but these are some of the highlights...

--Mt. Rushmore.  When we moved from North Carolina to Seattle in 1977, my parents drove right by Mt. Rushmore and didn't stop.  I think by the time we got to South Dakota they were done.  But I really want to see those big President's faces carved in stone.

--The biggest ball of twine.  Have you seen the movie "Michael"?  I'm kind of like John Travolta's character, and I love to visit quirky roadside attractions. There's some debate over which state actually houses the biggest ball, but any of them will do.

--The Catskills in New York.  On the opposite side of the country from where I live, this mountain wilderness looks beautiful.  Maybe I'll run into Johnny and Baby at Kellerman's!

--Hopi Indian Reservation in Arizona.  In fourth grade I did a class presentation on the Hopi Indians and their adobe buildings, and I've been fascinated by them every since.

--Charleston, South Carolina.  I'm sure my huge motor home, road tripping self would be completely out of place in this genteel city, but I'd love to see the historic architecture and beautiful gardens.

--The Cadillac Ranch in Texas.  This public art installation was created in 1974.  It consists of junk cadillacs half buried nose first in the ground, at an angle similar to the great pyramid in Egypt.  I really need to see this.

--Stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.  Any song by the Eagles brings me right back to my childhood.  There is actually a Standin On The Corner Park where you can have your picture taken.  Cool.

--Key West, Florida.  The southernmost point of the continental US is reached by a 113 mile, 42-bridge highway.  It's an eccentric, wacky island town home to writers, artists and retirees.  Plus gorgeous beaches, where I can probably get that fruity drink.

I'm constantly adding to this trip in my mind.  It would probably take two years to see everything!  Better start working on my husband now.

  2. Some of these, I have never even heard of! I'm a little disappointed I don't see Montana on this list -but I know that you have already been here. I'd love to see the adobe buildings of the Hopi Indians - maybe I will meet up with you there!

  13. LOVE this idea!! I wanted to do the same in Canada... nothing like getting to know your country!

  14. After driving across Canada 6 times I've lost the desire for road trips unless they are short. Like take a plane to the province or state you want to visit, and then rent a car and not be so rushed. Maybe with a motor home though it would be fine. I would still worry about driving through the mountains in one though.

It is great getting to know the vast country where you live. So many different spots to explore. I hope you get to go!

BTW...I wanted to mention I didn't get any of your post for the last week or so and then they all showed up in my feed today. Not sure what happened.

  15. The only one I haven't seen is the giant ball of twine and somehow I think I'll be okay If I skip that one haha! I got news for you though Johnny and Baby actually filmed Dirty Dancing about 45 miles north of my house in beautiful Lake Lure, NC (your old home state). I had pictures of it on my Instagram last weekend from there we go all the time! We take our canoe there sometimes.

  16. Love this post!! This is a GREAT idea!! I spent lots of time in the Catskills as a kid! When my grandma passed away, my grandpa bought home there! Love the Dirty Dancing reference :)

  17. Isn't it amazing what is there to see right in your own country?! This trip sounds perfect! While you're visiting the Dakotas, make a 'quick' side trip to Wyoming and visit Devil's Tower. Quite a sight!

  19. To chime in, the Catskills are halfway between my home and my parent's home, so please let me know if you'll ever be there! Only two hours from here and oh so delightful.
Key West is the stuff of dreams and I want to go back.
Mt. Rushmore didn't exactly work out for us. It was so fogged in that when we went to pay for the ticket and ask if it was worth it, the ticket seller pointed to a bank of fog and said, "Yeah.. that's Mt. Rushmore right there." So it wasn't worth the $20 because we couldn't see a thing!

    Maybe we'll try again someday.

  20. Did you ever see that ultimate road trip that hit every state at least once? I think road trips are cool, but I would need a big fancy motor home like you. I'm not a fan of long car rides!
