Mindful Monday: Young At Heart

May, 2017.  The month I turn 50.

Normally birthdays don't bother me, but I'm not going to lie and say 50 doesn't scare me a little bit.

I mean...there are probably more days behind me than ahead.  So much left to do, and so little time. And why is my butt sagging and getting bigger all at once?

But I honestly believe that age is just a number, and it's what's in your heart that counts. If you want your heart to stay young, that's totally up to you.

I don't have to look far to find the biggest role model.  Grandpa Ed.

If you've been here long, you know Grandpa Ed.  He'll be 99 this year, but he's sharper and wittier than me.  He still lives at home, drives, and keeps himself busy with art classes, exercise, and card games.  Inevitably, Grandpa's health has started to decline a bit, and he's been on dialysis for the last few years.  But his smile is the same and so is his attitude. Grandpa Ed loves life, and he's the most young at heart person I've ever met.

Grandpa has been visiting this week (yep, he still flies), and Saturday night his great granddaughter explained Snapchat to him, because he wanted to know how to work this new fangled thing.  And then this happened.

And this.

Love of life.  Check.  Young at heart.  Check.  Positive attitude.  Check.  If he can do it at 99, I can do it at 50.

Bring on the next half century.

  5. Aww! Grandpa Ed! How adorable! When is your birthday?? Mine is the 28th. I'll be 31...so much less exciting than last year but I'm totally okay with that. Haha.

  6. Wow! To live to be 99 and still drive, take care of yourself. That would be a dream!! Especially when I see my dad struggling so much at only 75. :( I will be turning a milestone birthday this year, too and it's been bothering me a lot... more than I thought it would! I guess milestone birthdays can be hard, but you are right. I don't want a number to define who I am or how I should think about myself!! Also, if anything it makes me take better care of myself! :) Love that Grandpa Ed is on SnapChat!!

  7. Yes!
My grandfather is still alive in his 90's, but I remember when he turned 80. My great uncle was 90 and was behind me and said, "He's so lucky to only be 80. He has so much living to look forward to!"
So 80 is the new 21.
    Which makes 50.. an infant?!

  11. Great attitude!

I found turning 50 last year to be quite emotional but in the end it turned out to be just another year gone by...with a few added pounds.

  15. Okay, your grandpa is one cool dude! :) And while getting older can be really scary + nerve-wracking, I definitely think you're only as old as you feel!

  16. My Father always told me to never grow up and I’ve been following his lead for the last 34 years. So far so great. I’m uber responsible but I still sing in the shower, dance around the house, and talk to my stuff animals. 35 is staring me in the face and I’m ok with the age I just thought i would be married with a couple of kids by now. I’m happy I’ve waited but 35 is screaming hurry up and get this ball rolling. i wonder what 50 will feel like. Wow Grandpa Ed sounds amazing, I want to be like him when I grow up
