My New Happy: I Did Not Own A Little Black Dress

I Did Not Own A Little Black Dress

My friend invited me to a charity auction as her plus one since her husband was out of town. How fun, I thought!   Then she forwarded the information to me, and I read that the attire was evening cocktail.  Uh oh.

Confession time....I did not own a little black dress.

I'm 47 years old, a LBD is sort of a staple item for any woman's closet, AND I'm a fashion major.  Don't ask how I found myself in this situation, because honestly, I have no reasonable answer.

So off to the mall I went.  There were so many options, it was almost overwhelming.  I actually ended up buying two dresses because I couldn't decide.

I'm really happy with this Calvin Klein dress.  An A line looks flattering on almost any body type, and I love the contrasting hem and skinny belt above my natural waist.  You can find it online at Macy's

I hope you can excuse my shoes - it was cold and rainy on the evening of the auction and I couldn't bring myself to put on strappy sandals.  Looking at the picture now, I see what a mistake that was.   Let's all close our eyes and imagine I was wearing these.

Ah, that's better.

Now back to reality.

A little drumroll please...you have heard me praising the Spring Style Me Challenge in previous posts.  Well, it's almost time to sign up for the Summer Style Me Challenge! Alison will once again be providing stylish, daily outfit inspiration.  Registration starts May 26th, and I encourage everyone to participate - I promise you will love it!

  1. This cocktail dress looks great on you! I love the white accents and the belt! Sometimes it doesn't make sense to wear strappy sandals. The shoes you wore are cute! Hope you had a great time at the event!

  4. I'm an Eileen Fisher addict, so my closet is teeming with LBDs.But I don't own a single pair of Lovely But Impractical Shoes. Nor will I ever. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/26/booming/26story-booming.html?ref=booming

  6. We traveled in Southeast Asia for a month in January, including a 13 day cruise. We needed to pack light, so my "go to" dress up cruise outfit was a no wrinkle little black dress from Dress Barn that I wore with different accessories to change the look. I really think it's still true---we all need a LBD. As for the shoes----no strappy sandals. I didn't want to spend the rest of our trip in a cast or be having hip surgery in Laos.

  9. Very pretty! I think the shoes you wore were fine, but with the taupe, perhaps you could wear it with taupe heels sometime too? My daughter just bought a very cute pair. She lives in Seattle -- :) :) what size do you wear? :)

You said you bought 2 dresses Lana - hope we see the other one sometime soon!

    1. I like the idea of taupe heels with this - it would be a whole different look. I'm a size 9. I still haven't worn the other dress, but I will definitely share it when I do!

    2. More casual probably, but classy. Darn. Looks like you will have to buy your own taupe heels then - my daughters wouldn't fit you - -or me either for that matter! :(

  12. I don't have a little black dress either! Everyone talks up the LBD so much I think my expectations are too high and I can't settle on one. This one is so pretty with the the waistline and hem detail! I love the fit!

  17. This one is perfect for your figure and I beleive lbd dresses are great because they give us the best figure. I only have one in black and I get compements any time I wear it.In general dresses make us women look special.

  18. You know it's become an institution when there's an acronym for it. LBD. And everyone knows it. (But me)

  19. I think the dress is beautiful! I always wear the same couple of dresses and I wonder if people notice! But I don't dress up that often so it's hard to justify buying a new dress for one occasion.
