Sobbing Through Preschool Graduation

Today I'm linking up with Kelly's Korner Blog for a graduation themed Show Us Your Life. I thought I would share a sweet story about my younger son's graduation from preschool eleven years ago.

T and Miss Joan

T loves school - always has and still does.  What he doesn't love is the last day of school.  He is very social, has lots of friends, and doesn't like to say goodbye.

When preschool graduation day rolled around, T decided that he would NOT be attending. He was going to miss his friends and his teachers, and I guess he thought it wouldn't happen if he wasn't there.   We finally convinced him to get dressed and put on his cute mortar board hat.

It's hard to tell from these pictures, but T cried through the whole ceremony.  He started out quietly, but as each classmate's name was read and they went up to get their diploma, T sobbed louder and louder.  The other parents kept shooting me sympathetic glances and I felt so badly for him.

By the time it was his turn to go to the front of the room, T was a wreck.  He shook Miss Joan's hand and ran back to his seat.  Once the ceremony was over he recovered quickly and enjoyed the playground with all of his friends.

Although there was no sobbing, T wasn't any happier at 5th grade or 8th grade graduation, and the last day of school is still a bummer for him.  Hmm...maybe I better start preparing him now for his last days of high school :).

Have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!

  5. This story is a reminder of how our lives are a series of endings - but fortunately these are followed by new beginnings!
I remember feeling sad that my little ones were already ready for kindergarten - and every milestone after that! The good news - for them and us - is that each stage presents its own joy! Thanks for sharing this story!
