Visiting Mount Rainier

The weather in Seattle was GLORIOUS this past weekend.  We decided to take advantage of the sunshine and drive to Mount Rainier.  G and I hadn't been since we were teenagers, and obviously the boys had never visited.  In our defense, it's a three hour drive from our house - and we've already spent a LOT of family time in the car this summer.

Standing 14,411 feet, Mount Rainier is the highest mountain in Washington, and the fourth highest in the United States.  It is considered an active volcano, although the last eruption was in 1894.  Mount Rainier is so tall that it makes its own clouds.

However, no clouds this weekend!  On clear days, we can actually see Mount Rainier from the town we live in.

T wants to climb Mount Rainier next summer with his dad.  It would require a lot of preparation and training, but it would be an amazing experience.

I have no explanation for what's going on with these rolled up shorts.  This kid has quite a sense of humor, and obviously, I've given up!

We spent the day hiking and enjoying the breathtaking scenery.  Words cannot do it justice, so I will share some pictures of the mountain and the surrounding wildflowers.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

  3. I visited there once in 2010 and it was something you never forget! I was actually going to contact you to see if you would help me on a post I want to do about Washington. I've been there once and did alot, but I'm sure there are some awesome things that I have missed. I wanted to see if you would collaborate with me and then maybe link this post to it if you want. Nothing right away maybe sometime in September? Let me know if you're interested. Email me and I will tell you where I've been and where I haven't and maybe you could cover some I have missed, anyway just a thought don't worry if you don't want to. I need to as Susan the same thing for Montana. My email is rm29303@gmail.com

  9. Wow, I can't imagine training to climb it! I'm so fascinated by mountains, which is funny because I live on the east coast and our highest is Mt. Washington, which isn't very high by global standards.
I did live in San Francisco for awhile and we drove to Oregon once and saw the most beautiful mountain. Shasta, I believe it was called?

    1. I can't imagine it either - which is why I won't be joining them :) I love mountains too - the process of how they are formed is so amazing.
