Try Something New: Take A New Way Home

Happy Friday, friends!  This has been a looooong week and I'm ready for the weekend - you?

It's month three in my "try something new" series, one of the goals I set for 2018.  In January, we went snowshoeing.  February found me in a sensory deprivation tank.  And in March, we took a new way home.

Late last month, we needed to head east for some business, which took us through our usual route over Snoqualmie Pass.  After dropping off the package, we had the rest of the day in front of us, with no plans.

What to do?  We took the long way home (Supertramp, anyone?).  I've lived in Washington for almost 40 years, but I've never driven over Blewett Pass, a lesser traveled route that deposits you right into the adorable Bavarian village of Leavenworth, at the base of the Cascade mountains.

The mountains were snowy but the roads were clear, and the sun was even out for a bit...

One of the coolest things about Washington State is all of the microclimates.  Before long we left the snow behind, and found ourselves in the arid, central part of the state, where a huge apple crop is grown every year.  No apples yet though.

Although we've been to Leavenworth dozens of times, in the spirit of trying something new, we decided to hit up a new restaurant and a few new stores in town.

And try a new dessert.

I have to admit, we might be starting to get the hang of this empty nesting thing.  Although there are many moments when I think, "the boys would love this", it's nice to be spontaneous, and not worry about anyone else's schedule.

And bonus,  I don't have to share my crepe.

  1. That made me giggle that you didn't have to share your crepe...because I would have (with my hubby no less....ha ha)!
You guys are doing such fun things!! And that's the way life is supposed to be especially now. We have been exploring our little city more too---and it's been so fun!!
    Enjoy your weekend!!

  3. This little place looks adorable, not to mention that crepe looks delicious. I love crepes and make them with Nutella and other toppings at least once a month. I really am enjoying your something new every month, I feel like that would be good for Logan and I to try in 2019, just to give us a new experience for just the two of us.

  4. Lana, I love this! So refreshing to try something new and it is as easy as taking the long way home. In my stage, that isn't going to fly with the kids and I WOULD have to share the crepe, if I got any at all. Haha.

  6. Anything with the word "Pass" in it sounds treacherous and scary to me. Haha. But I love the idea of doing this!

    1. Ha - yes, it can be scary! And Thomas has to drive over the pass to get back and forth to college - I hate it! But it is pretty, especially when I'm not driving.

  9. All the Hallmark movies must be filmed there, that little town looks like it's right out of a movie set! What a fun adventure. Trying something new is such a great idea and you've really done it well each month. I can't wait to see what you do next month!
And the empty nesting thing. Ugh. Yeah I love running around and doing things with my husband - our youngest will leave in the Fall and right now he's always so busy he's hardly ever with us. But I do always think of my boys and how nice it would be if we were all together. Guess that will never change but it also doesn't stop us from enjoying ourselves either.
    Have a great weekend Lana!!!

    1. I don't think that ever changes - I always wish they were with us, but we've been having a great time being spontaneous.

  11. Happy Friday My Friend! We finally made it, this week was long for me also. :) Living in California I always marvel how beautiful it is, and Washington is no different. I love the snow on the mountains, its very picturesque. Hello dessert :)

  12. I love that Supertramp song. And I love the idea of the long way home. We do it here too. I love doing it alone and finding new cafes and treasures. Western MA is full of treasures. Although I miss the epic beauty of the west coast, as evidenced above!

    1. Such a beautiful country we live in, with so much to explore. Wish I had more money and more time! Supertramp always makes me think of my dad since they were one of his favorites.
