The Evolution of Personal Style

Deena, Abbie and I were talking the other night about personal style, and how it evolves over time (did you know we have a Podcast?  Find it here by scrolling to the bottom of the page).

Which prompted me to pull out some old pictures and ponder my personal style...and maybe reminisce about my natural hair color.

Things started out pretty well.  This would be the late 70's, and I was trendy in my flare jeans and graphic t-shirt.  Then the 80's hit, and we all know what happened then.

Baggy polo shirt, baggy shorts, baggy everything.  Socks with loafers.  But that was the style, and I was rocking it.  Unfortunately, I didn't get the memo that oversize wasn't better, and as the trends moved on, I did not.

I don't even know what's happening here.  Oversize sweatshirt, huge sweatpants.  And this is how I dressed for the next decade, always trying to hide my body behind the biggest clothes I could get away with.

I remember looking at this picture in the early 2000's and realizing that I had completely lost my personal style.  I literally looked like I was wearing a potato sack.  Somewhere between motherhood and busyness, I had given up.

So I decided to start paying more attention to me.  There wasn't a lot of time to exercise, and even though I needed to lose a few pounds, I wanted to look pretty right where I was in that moment.

By buying clothes that fit my current body, and incorporating my love for color and pattern again, I slowly started to feel better about myself.  Getting dressed in things I enjoyed made me happy.  Which also made me a better mom, wife, and friend.

Since then I've mostly kept that philosophy in mind when dressing for my personal style.  Put on something every day that makes you feel pretty, no matter your weight, or your age, or your mood.  You deserve it.  Know that you are beautiful, right where you are, right now.

How has your personal style evolved?

  1. Yep, love 80's music but not the fashion so much! I completely lost my sense of style after I had my daughter and was in a style rut for a long time. I completely agree that you should put something pretty on everyday! It really does makes a big difference in how you feel!

  2. We both did the same thing. I remember seeing a photo of myself in my first marriage, and I think I looked older then than I do now...and I was 20 years younger. So much of it is what we are going through in our lives too (I think).
I love the boys in that photo...including your hubby!!

And I love your commitment to rocking your style - reclaiming it after the having young kids phase.
