My New Happy: Into The Woods

Into The Woods

Yesterday my mom, sister, niece and I ventured out to the movie theater to see Into The Woods.  I've been looking forward to this film since 2012 when Disney announced they would be bringing Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical to the big screen.

Opinions were mixed among my little group of reviewers, but personally, I really enjoyed the movie.  Although it combines the classic fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack and The Beanstalk, this isn't your usual Disney feel good film.

In fact, the final lesson is more like this:  bad things happen, but life goes on, because no one is alone.  Into The Woods is a little dark, and doesn't leave you with the traditional happily ever after.  There is death, betrayal, and disillusionment.

But there is also wonderful casting, beautiful cinematography, detailed costumes, and lots of lovely singing.  Plus the always wonderful Meryl Streep.  I give it a hearty thumbs up.

It's the final weekend of 2014.  I'm not sure how that's possible, but here we are anyway. Hope it's wonderful!

  1. So hoping to see this movie. Maybe tomorrow after my daughter leaves to go back home. Thank you for your review. I love fairy tales, always loved teaching them in my library. I like the moral of the movie. We all need to remember to keep on keeping on. Enjoy your last week of the year, sweet friend.

  2. How nice that the four women in your family had such a fun outing! I'm hoping to see the movie at some point also. What a great family photo! We meant to have our Christmas Eve guests take one of us - and we all forgot! Enjoy the rest of 2014, and time with your family!

  3. I want to see this but first I must see the "Wild" with Reese Witherspoon. I read this book by Cherly Strayed shortly after I began blogging and was crazy about it. I can't wait too see it when things slow down!

  5. Happy last weekend of 2014!
I really want to see this movie but I wasn't at all familiar with the story until recently. I think Scarlet might like it, eventually. She can watch really light episodes of "Once Upon a Time" with me (the non-violent ones) and I know she does appreciate different spins on fairy tales.

  7. I think I smiled all the way through this movie...although they took out a bunch of my favourite parts from the musical.

  8. I've seen the musical, and wondered if my preteen would be too young for the movie. Perhaps just my husband and I will go.

  9. One of my co workers went to go see this too and said it was very good. I didn't know much about it, but I'm glad you gave this explanation. Just enough to get me interested, but not too much to give anything away. Gonna have to go see it now!

  10. I really enjoyed Into The Woods with my family! It's not your usual Disney movie, but I liked it a lot. The actors were great, and Meryl Streep was amazing. Thumbs up from me! Can't believe it's almost 2015. Time flies! Oh, by the way, did you know some funny comedians who went to oxbridge?
