TBB Book Review: Summer Reads

Let's talk about books!  For the last two months, the members of TBB Book Club have been reading from a list of ten possible choices, picked from recommendations by our "book pals".  So many great titles to choose from!

I have a confession.  About five years ago, I made the decision to stop reading books that were dark or depressing or sad.  There's enough negativity in the world, and I want to escape into a bright, funny, enjoyable world when I read.  I know that I'm limiting myself, but I hate to finish a book and feel worse than when I started.

So even though everyone was praising The Nightingale, I didn't want to read a book set in World War II.  Have I ever mentioned that I used to write copy for WWII documentaries, after I left retail, before Conner was born? Trust me, I've read enough about that war.

But my book pals chose it for me, so I broke the rule and decided to give it a try.  I'm so glad I did.

The book follows two sisters in France who both do extraordinary, although very different, things during the war.  I gained an important perspective about the difficulties that civilians went through as Germany rolled through their country.  Yes, parts of the book were dark and disturbing.  But so many other parts were uplifting, inspiring and a testament to the difference people can make when they set aside their fears. Reading this book made me a better person.  Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

I also just finished the new book by one of my favorite authors, Jen Lancaster.  Called Stories I'd Tell In Bars, it's a return to her memoir roots.  I've always loved Jen's books.  We're the same age, and her 80's references and outspoken personality usually have me laughing out loud.  Sadly, this book was a big meh for me.  But, if you haven't read her before, I definitely recommend starting with Bitter Is The New Black.  So good.

If you'd like to see what we're reading for September, go here.  And we're always happy to welcome new members.  If you're interested let me know, and I'll get you all hooked up!

  5. Too often, I read depressing books and then I say, "next time I'll read a beach read!" And I never do. I'm happy to say that right now I am! It's Sophie Kinsella's new one.
    I loved The Nightingale, though..
